Letter from the President

     Hello!
Another year is over and I think we’ve all done a wonderful job. This was our sixth year.
I feel like we are helping to make a difference in the stray dog and cat population in Cass and our immediate surrounding counties.
I want to thank all of the volunteers that helped at the center, all of our foster homes, and all those that donate much needed money, food and supplies that keep us going every year.
I would like to give a special thanks to Michelle McKinley our Longaberger consultant who so generously donated a portion of her proceeds from our Longaberger fundraiser.
Also, I’d like to thank Michelle Smith for letting us do the Gold Canyon Candle fundraisers. They have been a great success. We will be having that fundraiser every spring and also in the fall of each year.
We all want to thank the Logansport Mall for letting us bring the rescued dogs and cats in for people to be able to see what is available for adoption.
I’ll have year-end totals in the next newsletter. Hope everyone has a wonderful New Year, Thanks again,
                                                                                                Nancy Moore
                                                                                                President

Being a Youth Volunteer

We have a program for youth volunteers. All kids ages 12 to 16 are welcome to help out at the adoption center on Saturdays. We allow younger children to also volunteer if accompanied by an adult. We need two youth volunteers per shift, in two-hour shifts, between the hours of      11 am and 5 pm, to help walk dogs and interact with all the animals to help their visit to the center be as easy as possible. This is a great opportunity to learn about how animal rescue is done, and an excellent community service project.

In order to be a volunteer, just come into the Adoption center on Saturday and pick up a permission form, fill these forms out, and return them to the center.

DON’T FORGET TO VOLUNTEER TO STAFF THE ADOPTION CENTER ON SATURDAY!!

Tax Reminder

Just a reminder for the volunteer and foster families—expenses you incur for CFP, but for which you do not receive reimbursements are tax deductible. This includes pet food purchased out of your own pocket and any other similar expenses are included such as in-kind (not cash) gifts and listed at their full value, including sales tax. Keep a record so that you can pull it all together for your tax return.

The New Pet Decision

Getting a pet is a big decision. There’s a lot more to it than just “falling in love” with the perfect pet! Before you get a pet, you need to learn what’s involved with pet ownership. You also need to answer some important questions:
Ø
Why do you want a pet?
Ø
Are you ready for the commitment a pet requires?
Ø
What can you offer a pet?
Ø
Do you know the traits and needs of various types of pets?
Ø
What sort of pet should you get?

LKC and CFP Team Up to offer Dog Obedience Training

The Logansport Kennel Club and Cause for Paws will be working together to offer a dog obedience training series, starting mid March. Keep it in mind for your personal pets. Members of LKC will be the instructors and the classes will be held at the CFP Adoption Center. The two organizations will split the class fees. Watch in the next Paw Print for more details.

Rural King More Than A Farm Store

Every Saturday CFP will have a few dogs and cats, which are available for adoption, at the Logansport Rural King store. The store is also giving a 10% discount on the first purchase of pet supplies when an adoption is completed.

All Natural Dog Cookies

The Sub Debs made and sold yummy dog treats before Christmas.  They will also be available for Valentines Day and also Easter.

To Continue Heartworm Preventative

Remember to continue to give your dog(s)heartworm preventative throughout the winter. Local veterinarians recommend year-round use.

How you can help A CAUSE FOR PAWS

Cash Donations:  Veterinary expenses for an animal are generally higher than its adoption fee.  Cash donations are always welcome.

Other Donations:  We need decent quality dry dog and cat food, cat liter, dog treats such as pig ears, pet toys such as catnip mice, rubber chew toys, and new or used leashes and collars (particularly Gentle Leaders).  Other items we use regularly include paper towels, trash bags, copy paper, new or gently used bath towels, and air freshener.  We also welcome donations of heartworm and flea preventatives.

Volunteers:  We need both adult and youth volunteers on Saturdays at the adoption center.  Youth need to be at least 12 years old and have parental consent.  If you can’t help on Saturdays, please ask about other tasks.  We often need help with fundraising events, such as making our natural dog biscuits.

Foster Homes:  We always have more animals needing care than we have foster homes.  A foster family has the following responsibilities:  daily care for the animal, scheduling of and transport to needed vet appointments, social interaction with the animal, and transport to and from the adoption center at the Logansport Mall.  We have a need for all sorts of foster homes; short term emergency foster homes, rest and recovery foster homes, and of course typical foster homes for all the other dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens that require a temporary warm and safe home to await their new family.  If this is something you think you might be able to do, come and talk to us, we would love to give you more information and share our experiences with you.

You are Invited!
